Helping you stay strong, mobile and independent

Because getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love.

The Physio Movement Townsville helps older adults improve strength, mobility, balance and confidence to maintain independence.

Whether you’re recovering from a hospital stay, worried about falls, managing arthritis or another chronic condition, experiencing reduced mobility, or simply noticing that everyday activities are becoming harder, our team can help.

We provide aged care Physiotherapy and Aged Care Exercise Physiology in Townsville, with appointments available in our clinic or in your own home.

Care may be accessed privately or, depending on your individual eligibility and circumstances, through funding pathways including My Aged Care,  Support at Home, DVA and Medicare Chronic Condition Management referrals.

Physiotherapy for older adults in Townsville

Additionally, physiotherapy covers more than injury treatment.

However, as we age, changes in strength, balance, mobility, joint movement and confidence can make everyday tasks more challenging. Consequently, a physiotherapist can assess what’s contributing to these changes and develop a practical treatment and rehabilitation plan.

In addition, our Townsville physiotherapists can assist with:

  • Falls prevention and balance
  • Reduced mobility
  • Walking difficulties
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Back, hip, knee and shoulder pain
  • Strength loss and deconditioning
  • Recovery following surgery
  • Rehabilitation after hospitalisation
  • Mobility following illness or injury
  • Neurological conditions
  • Safe use of mobility aids
  • Maintaining independence at home
  • Building confidence with everyday movement

However, your treatment isn’t based simply on your age or diagnosis.

We look at what you want and need to be able to do,  whether that’s walking safely around your home, getting out of a chair more easily, returning to gardening, managing stairs, getting back into the community or simply feeling steadier on your feet.

Exercise Physiology for older adults in Townsville

However, remaining active is among the most powerful things we can do as we age.

As a result, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a health professional using prescribed exercise to improve function.

Furthermore, at TPM Townsville, Exercise Physiology could help older adults improve:

~ Strength
Maintaining muscle strength can make everyday activities such as getting out of a chair, carrying groceries and climbing stairs easier.

~ Balance
Targeted exercises can challenge and improve the systems involved in balance and help build confidence with movement.

~ Mobility
Exercise can help maintain the physical capacity required for walking, getting around the home and participating in the community.

~ Bone health
Appropriately prescribed resistance and weight-bearing exercise can form an important part of managing osteoporosis and maintaining bone health.

~ Chronic health conditions
Clinical exercise may form part of the management of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis.

~ Confidence and independence
For many people, the goal isn’t to become an athlete. It’s being able to keep doing everyday things independently.

Falls prevention, strength & balance

However, a fall can have a significant impact on an older person’s confidence and independence.

Sometimes the warning signs appear before a fall occurs.

You might notice that you or a family member is:

  • Holding onto furniture when walking
  • Becoming less confident outside the home
  • Struggling to get up from a chair
  • Avoiding stairs
  • Walking more slowly
  • Losing strength
  • Feeling unsteady
  • Becoming less active because of fear of falling
  • Having repeated trips, stumbles or falls

Our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can assess factors that may be contributing to falls risk and develop an individualised program targeting areas such as leg strength, balance, mobility, walking capacity and confidence.

To that end, the aim is simple: help you move as safely and independently as possible.

Can’t easily get to the clinic?

TPM Townsville offers Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology home visits for eligible clients across Townsville.

Home-based allied health can be particularly helpful for people who have difficulty travelling, have reduced mobility, are recovering after hospitalisation or would benefit from rehabilitation in their everyday environment.

Moreover, a home visit may include:

  • Mobility assessment
  • Falls and balance assessment
  • Strength assessment
  • Individualised home exercise programs
  • Walking practice
  • Functional rehabilitation
  • Chair transfers
  • Practising stairs or steps
  • Exercise progression
  • Rehabilitation following hospitalisation
  • Advice for family members or carers
  • Strategies to maintain independence at home

Where appropriate, we can communicate with your Aged Care Provider, GP, care coordinator, support provider and other members of your healthcare team.

My Aged Care & support at home physiotherapy

Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology can form part of an older person’s aged-care supports when the services are appropriate to their assessed needs and approved care plan.

Allied health services available through Australia’s aged-care system can include both Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology, with the focus on helping older Australians maintain or regain function and independence.

Depending on your assessment and circumstances, allied health services may be accessed through programs including Support at Home and the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

If Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology has been included in your approved supports, speak with your provider or care coordinator about whether you can access services through The Physio Movement Townsville.

Support at Home Allied Health

Because the Australian Government’s Support at Home program is designed to help eligible older Australians remain living independently at home for longer.

Clinical supports available under the program can include allied health services such as Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology where they form part of the person’s assessed needs and support plan.

Depending on your goals, this may involve working on areas such as:

  • Maintaining or restoring mobility
  • Improving strength
  • Falls prevention
  • Balance training
  • Rehabilitation
  • Managing age-related physical decline
  • Increasing independence with daily activities
  • Building capacity following illness or hospitalisation

Furthermore, eligibility and approved services are determined through the aged-care assessment process.

Private Physiotherapy & Exercise Physiology

However, you don’t need aged-care funding to see us.

Older adults are welcome to book privately with our Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists.

Private appointments can be particularly useful if you want to take a proactive approach to maintaining your strength, balance and mobility rather than waiting until these begin significantly affecting your independence.

You can contact TPM Townsville directly to discuss whether an in-clinic appointment or home visit would be most suitable

Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology ~ Which Do I Need?

There is considerable overlap between the two professions, and many older adults can benefit from both.

Physiotherapy may be particularly appropriate when pain, injury, surgery, reduced mobility or a specific physical problem is limiting what you can do. Your Physiotherapist can assess the problem and provide treatment and rehabilitation to improve your movement and function.

Exercise Physiology has a strong focus on using individually prescribed exercise to improve physical capacity and help manage chronic or complex health conditions.

For some people, the best approach involves both.

For example, a Physiotherapist may initially assess and rehabilitate an injury or mobility problem before an Exercise Physiologist helps progressively build strength, balance and overall capacity.

At TPM, our multidisciplinary team can work together so your care can progress as your needs change.

When should I consider Aged Care physio or exercise physiology?

You don’t need to wait until you’ve had a serious fall or lost your independence.

Consider an assessment if you or someone you care for has:

  • Had one or more recent falls
  • Become noticeably weaker
  • Started struggling to get out of chairs
  • Become less steady when walking
  • Stopped doing activities because of fear of falling
  • Recently returned home from hospital
  • Had surgery and needs rehabilitation
  • Reduced their physical activity
  • Difficulty walking longer distances
  • Arthritis or persistent joint pain
  • Osteoporosis or concerns about bone health
  • A chronic condition that would benefit from prescribed exercise
  • Difficulty completing everyday activities independently

Early support can help identify problems and provide a plan for maintaining function and independence.

My_aged_care_physio

At The Physio Movement, our approach to healthy ageing is about much more than treating pain. We want to help people maintain the strength, mobility, confidence and physical capacity needed for life.

That means understanding what’s important to you and building your treatment around it.

~ It could be walking to the letterbox without worrying about falling.

~ Getting up from the floor to play with your grandchildren.

~ Returning to bowls or golf.

~ Managing the stairs at home.

~ Getting back into the garden.

~ Or simply staying strong enough to continue living independently.

Those goals matter,  and they’re what guide your treatment.
