Strength and Conditioning Training with Multiple Sclerosis 

What is Multiple Sclerosis? 

MS is a neurological condition resulting in nerve damage which disrupts communication between the brain and the body. Multiple Sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. 

 

How Often Should We Exercise? 

Guidelines suggest; 

  • Strength training twice per week
  • 2-3 days of moderate aerobic exercise (10-40 minute bouts)
  • Aerobic and strength can be completed on same day however it is suggested to have one rest day after resistance training to rest muscle. 

 

What Intensity Should Strength Training be Completed at? 

  • If you’re just starting out your exercise journey, ensure to progressively increase the time, frequency, and intensity to suit tolerability of the person. 
  • It’s suggested 1-3 sets of 8-15 reps, of approximately 5-10 exercises.
  • Mainly focus on the large muscle groups of the body or where there are deficits/weaknesses. 
  • Moderate to high intensity resistance of free weights, machine weights or resistance bands. 
  • Resting 2-4 minutes between sets and between muscle groups. 

 

What are the Potential Benefits of Strength Training? 

Decrease secondary deconditioning: maximise mobility, posture, and balance; reduce risk of falls; optimise recovery after relapse; increase energy levels and decrease fatigue; increase muscle strength; may reduce spasticity; may have neuro-protective effect and anti-inflammatory effect. 

 

What to Consider When Training? 

  • If you experience heat sensitivity, ensure to exercise in aircon or with a nearby cooling fan and to stay hydrated. 
  • If you’re at risk of falls, ensure safety by completing exercises in a seated position. 
  • If a relapse occurs, consider modifying or regressing exercises until symptoms are stable.
